Osteoarthitis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease that causes the breakdown of cartilage and other joint tissues, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling. OA can cause changes in bone, cartilage, and other joint tissues, which can lead to disability or make it hard to do work or daily tasks.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

  • Pain: Pain when using the joint, often a sharp ache or burning sensation
  • Stiffness: Stiffness in the joint, especially in the morning or after resting
  • Swelling: Swelling in and around the joint, especially after using the joint a lot
  • Limited movement: Difficulty moving the joint or a limited range of movement
  • Joint instability: Feeling that the joint is loose or unstable
  • Tenderness: Tenderness in the joint
  • Grating sensation: A grating or crackling sound or sensation in the joint
  • Bone spurs: Bone spurs around a joint
  • Joints appearing larger: Joints appearing slightly larger or more "knobbly" than usual

Osteoarthritis can affect different people differently:

  • For some people, it's relatively mild and doesn't affect day-to-day activities
  • For others, it causes significant pain and disability
  • Symptoms may come and go, which can be related to things like activity levels and even the weather.
