Dry-Needling

What is Dry Needling

Dry needling is a physiotherapy technique that uses thin needles to treat musculoskeletal pain and movement issues:

  • How it works

A physical therapist inserts thin needles into the skin to stimulate trigger points, which are tight knots in muscles that can cause pain. The needles cause a localized muscle contraction that relaxes the trigger point and reduces pain.

  • Benefits
    • Reducing pain, muscle spasms, and inflammation
    • Improving blood circulation and healing
    • Improving nerve function and muscle performance
    • Preventing scar tissue formation
    • Reducing muscular tension

Dry needling can cause a number of side effects, including:

  • Soreness: A common side effect that can occur during or after treatment. It can feel like you've had an intense workout and can last up to 48 hours.
  • Bruising: Bruising can occur at or near the injection site. Common areas for bruising include the shoulders, base of the neck, head and face, arms, and legs.
  • Bleeding: A small amount of bleeding may occur after the needles are removed.
  • Fatigue: You may feel tired after treatment.
  • Nausea: You may feel nauseous after treatment.
  • Emotional response: You may feel emotional, giggly, or "loopy" after treatment. This response can last up to an hour or two.
  • Temporary worsening of symptoms: Your symptoms may temporarily worsen after treatment. This is normal and should improve within 24–48 hours.
